		<description>1. The Magic of Unique Work
 I find the classification as a designer as something problematic for me. It is too broad and general of a concept to describe my work. On the other hand, I like the room it gives. A designer can design for a series, but also for something unique and artistic in its content. I would like to call myself an applied art designer. It gives me the right kind of title for my artistic thinking and enables creating content already before tangible, physical design. Things happen in this order in my case: The visual form is the last dimension that calls to interact with the object.Individuality, uniqueness – personal and delicately chosen details are the spice and passion of my work. They are the things I want to immerse myself in. Applied art is my true calling. I find that I am privilegded, when I can work for it – diversely and unconditionally. Creativity is my most important recource, I cherish it in every way. Without it I could not work genuenly, and for that I am constantly making choices between the project that I should do and bring forward and the ones I should let go.There are so many things happening that an individual can not affect on. But through my work I can do so, and I can do it with dignity. I hope that in the long run it would be something meaningfull for many others.

	The desire to measure life by speed and productivity is one of society’s most corrosive impulses. Decisions made at machine speed are disconnected from the sustainable whole and produce only an illusory sense of well-being which ultimately exploits the human being. Universumi encourages us to let go of artificial time management, which holds no real meaning in bigger picture. The clock shows you the minutes and let you hear the seconds, yet the truest record of time can be seen in patina that slowly forms the metal parts.

	Sculpture jewellery asks if art can be functional while it explores scale of changing space, movement and use of material from human perspective.

Wearable art enables interaction but it also affects new senses through touch. Visual shape is suddenly something more. With functional attributes of object person can continue to create valuable content to the art work.

		<description>

2. The Art of Creative CollaborationI highly appreciate the chance of working with colleagues. Creative collaborations are unique exhibition projects with some ordered works. What these projects have in common is the respect for craftmanship and a great desire to understand it and to cherish it.
As a result of the mechanical automation of the manufacturing process the deeper understanding of craftmanship in the process has changed. There is a risk that this delicate understanding will disappear.
To me, craftmanship means a human, present and interactive way of manufactoring with quality. The crafter, like the designer, learn from each other. We work together towards the same goal. It is pure and genuine. This inspires and touches me everytime.
Making of different types of experiments and prototypes is my type of design work. I process physical samples together with an artisan when ever I have a chance. Interaction with different kinds of craftsmen and sustaining the high quality manufacturing in Finland is a matter close to my heart.

3. Ongoing Research of Industrial Unique Design &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

I enjoy designing collections and it feels natural for me. This way I can contentify the design or I can make an object stand out better with its’ individual characteritics. When I was studying I created Industrial Unique design method; an idea of something being
unique – yet industrially produced – tangible in a new way. The content of the
design and the values of the company can make the serial production something
unique and tender. This is what I want to exam and learn together with the industry.

I want to work only with companies that create high quality and sustainable products. Cooperation works well when all partners are committed to work the same way. This way something truly new can be created. By working together the World is more humaine.

4. Small Series – a Poem of Purpose
	I do not plan certain artifacts, neither I use certain material nor scale, but I create objects that have a story to tell or a purpose to exist. After a long creative process these objects are formed to a certain scale and are made of certain material.The objects that I design are usually gentle and soft in their shape and existence. They are always unique – visually or in their content. The cooperation with the artisans is my primary objective when designing and producing small series.
I want the work to be mindfull and challenging. I want to put my soul into objects that I design. When I exercise new ways of thinking, my design can remain in use. This is when I have succeeded. Quality can not be replaced with quantity.&#38;nbsp;

5. Design as ArtI have found glass to be something fascinating. I don’t blow glass myself, but for some reason, I feel like I belong in the hot workshop. &#38;nbsp;Clear glass is something that I like in particular. It is immaterial yet very optic. Through glass, one can look through to new views of one’s own perspectives. Glass, as material, and the shape it forms, is equally unique to everyone. I am fascinated by the whole process of creating a glass object. How the artistic ambition is led to interact with the opportunities of the fine art of glassblowing, and how everything turns out in practise. Alongside working with the glassblowers, I truly enjoy designing the molds. By creating a mold I can put my fingerprint on glass.The production of a glass piece often requires participation of many skilled artisans already before stepping into a hot workshop. Glassblowers are – along with so many others in the process – artisans. Inspite of the long traditions, countries and workshops have their own culture. The intricacies of all these unique opportunities engage me.

	The flood of information that disrupts our ability to think clearly cannot be abruptly shut off.&#38;nbsp; But, it is possible to set one’s own overflow hole at an appropriate level. This conceptual artwork asks: Is the realization of individual responsibility a utopia of our time? At same time, the work creates hope through human learning.

The Momenta -artwork consists of five drinking glasses, four of which have holes at different levels. The perforated glass series creates a conceptual exercise in finding ones own-enough that intact glass can be used responsibly.

Fundamentti series study different foundations with glass. Seemingly perfect forms reveals comforting when realizing that harmony has been created by freehand alone. Through several molds, natural handprint has been casted in glass, leaving room but making space, for the material itself.&#38;nbsp;

The minimalism of the works contain overlapping, silent layers that emerge in interaction with people and the environment. &#38;nbsp;

	Observatorio is glass sculpture that challenges analogue wall clocks with its functionality. Glass reacts with surrounded changing light and creates moving reflection in clock-like manner.

Sculpture is like an indoor sundial awakening us to everyday fragility in its natural rhythm and intensity. Some people live with frozen time via artificial light.

Sculptures are also an ode to consideration and essential. Glassworks has been created in hands of different artisans with more than hundred years of combined experience.

My artistic inspiration My artistic starting point is nature, its details in macro scale interest me especially. To me, nature represents
gentle power. It finds its way.In my
opinion, Finnish designers often find their inspiration from nature, because
it's so close to us and always present. The changes of the distinct four
seasons and the sparsely inhabited sceneries make it easy to follow
nature. A plant withers away and dies. Winter comes with its nothingness. From
this emptiness grows a new beginning. Instead of having constant greenery
and urban surroundings around us we have an extreme season of growth, space and
natural light. Seasons give room for our minds to work. There are pauses in the
visuality around us. Something new can be born.

The Abstraction of Design&#38;nbsp;I design multidimensionally. For example, I study what the user feels when touching the object. This makes my design become a mirror to the user.
At their best, along with their necessity, my objects bring immaterial value to their users. This engages inner force of the user. This is precious for humankind in the long run.&#38;nbsp;

Logical and practical thinking are part of the basic professional skills of a designer. I immerse myself with my work mentally, and this is why it is important who I work with and how. I am an emotianal designer. This is how I can make my design reach deeper and with more power. Designing is humain and sensitive thinking to me.&#38;nbsp;

When I design I think about life of a human; its’ evolution and history. What is primary for us? How I can support humanity with my work? How art and design are connected with this?&#38;nbsp;

In my own applied art design I put an emphasis on art. Through art I can create meanings that are impossible to express in other ways. This is exploration of an unknown.

My design is multisensory. In practise, it is me being hypersensitive in haptic understanding – having a vision when choosing the materials, technical production, details and proportions. It’s important to me how the object feels in my hands. What’s the weight of it? Temperature? How does it feel to touch the soft arch of the wood? What other feelings it awakes to use, look or touch the object? You can experience the visuality only in one point of view through your eyes. Only with all your senses the object is whole.
When I design I feel great gratitude, but also responsibility. I think a lot and I try to give room for designing. Objects that have been designed in high quality and with care, take time, but this is the only way they become timeless.

		<description>

	Everything
starts
from
the
movement

1. Creative work

&#60;img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/35206921883f18b72ab0211f8616040231e6fc09cfa16d1352b755b1b0565e25/IMG_hand.jpg" data-mid="113261017" border="0" data-scale="55" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/35206921883f18b72ab0211f8616040231e6fc09cfa16d1352b755b1b0565e25/IMG_hand.jpg" /&#62;

When I draw or sculpt, first there is the draft that tells me a thousand things of which I then try to extract in more detail.
 My sketching is very fast, as if I try to catch my thoughts and wriggle the flashes on to paper. When I feel I can stop, I start with a more detailed drawing.

I love sketching paper. I go through it a lot. Even when there’s a bad drawing, it doesn’t matter - there can be an idea behind it. Crumpling paper makes such a gentle sound. It says: Let’s make another one.
Drawing, sculpting and crafting is finding the right arch.
I find the arch by using different types of tools. When I find it, I can start carving on a physical material. I enjoy the honesty of the tangible material. Form works only once the arch is right in its spacial dimensions.I think through my hands. I express myself with
my hands. Reaction is immediate. When I carve and sculpt, the movement of my
hands and the form it gives transfers instant knowledge to my eyes of how the
next move needs to be done. I am a sculptor.
Model making is an extremely important stage in my working process and it can’t be skipped.&#38;nbsp;
Three dimensional shape gives a lot of valuable information. Sculpting is my way of thinking and to be sure of my decisions. With touchable models it’s also easier to talk with the artesans about what is possible to do. Which shape is worth prototyping. Which form allowes to be born.
&#38;nbsp;

I often have several projects under progress in parallel.I enjoy a slow process, where I can leave the work mature in my subconcious mind. Thinking requires space. Meanwhile, I can focus on other projects. Distance develops the idea and makes room for art and restores the focus on the creative process.
I leave things in stages when I feel that I am going in circles. After working with another material or scale, everything is clear, and work continues. Then it clicks. It is a magical moment: there is a form that is not too far from the first sketch, but the essence has been captured and all the unnecessary has been removed and left behind. Now the form has quality and a soul.
2. Collaboration

Interaction with Artisans. &#38;nbsp;After chosing the model to be prototyped, I have reached the halfway point. Often, I need to prepare a mold and then the prototyping can truly begin. The objects I create are being manufactured in workshops. The interaction with different types of artisans plays a big role. I need to think how to pass on the instructions, so the craftsmen can do their part. How can I interact with their work by reacting and cooperating?

An example of my hand-eye-coordination:

In the glass cabin the glassblower is sculpting. I am
watching and providing impulses to the sculptors movements. All this happens very
fast. All the productions where I can work together with artisans are great. It
is like carefully planned choreography, but with a chance of
expression. It is wonderful to work with an artisan. One can feel involved and
this allows me to be part of the object.
3. Production

In designing an object, I use the same creative process as in art. Production determines whether it is a work of art
or an industrially produced series.
When I start creating an art work, my goal is not so much in the final piece, but in creating a safe area, where the craftsmen and artisans can work without forcing a theme that I have chosen. The safe area is a manuscript of where everybody has their role in it. The art piece comes alive only once it’s been created. It is my duty to be present and intuitive in the manufacturing process to perform just the right kind of directing that the situation requires.
Serial manufactoring, on other hand, needs a solid master plan to be enabled. In this case, the team work has been done already before the blueprints. To compare this to the artistic process with the safe area, there is no room for changes and experimenting on a large scale serial manufactoring. This is why producing prototypes for testing and enhancements is a very important stage of the process. I try to get as much attention and time for this stage as possible. Product developement takes a lot of recources, but without it there can not be anything new or sustainable.&#38;nbsp;In this sense,&#38;nbsp;the same hand-eye-impulse is present in everything I do.&#38;nbsp;

Since
2008, after graduating with Masters of Arts, in the faculty of Applied Art and Design in the University of Arts and Design Helsinki, Mari has been working with various design and art projects through
her own studio.
Mari has become one of the most awarded designers of her generation.
Mari Isopahkala has been working in international projects and has exhibited Finnish art and design all over Europe,
Asia and North America.

From the beginning, Mari’s design has been a combination of non-compromising artistic work and design projects by order. Overlapping her own artistic work and corporative design projects have made it possible for Mari to remain an independent and forward-thinking creative.

A large part of Mari’s work has been enabled with grants and the trust of different foundations in Finland.

Since 2013, the main point of focus in Mari’s design has been designing her own small series of objects, developing new objects and their manufacturing, improving the understanding of the material and processing of it in addition, applying this all to her artistic work.
